Local to Edinburgh

Edinburgh work, run from the Borders

Edinburgh is around an hour and a quarter north of our Coldstream workshop and our Duns base, and we take on work there as programmed projects rather than short-notice call-outs. That is a deliberate distinction: it would be dishonest to promise a twenty-minute response in the city, and it would be equally daft to pretend a contractor with over 40 years of commercial, industrial and renewable experience cannot deliver a fit-out or a solar installation an hour up the A68.

Where we work in and around Edinburgh

We cover Edinburgh and the surrounding area, including the city centre and New Town, the commercial and industrial estates on the edges of the city, and the routes south through Dalkeith, Pathhead and Lauder that connect it to our home ground in Berwickshire.

Getting to Edinburgh

Because of the distance we plan Edinburgh work properly: a site survey, a written fixed price, materials loaded before we set off, and a programme agreed with you rather than invented on the day. Free quotes supplied. Existing contract customers are covered for out-of-hours attendance where a failure would stop the business.

Property types we know here

Edinburgh work tends to come to us as commercial and mixed-use property: offices and fit-outs, retail and hospitality units, HMOs and flatted residential owned by Borders clients, and industrial and warehouse premises with three-phase supplies. We also carry out solar PV and battery installations on commercial roofs and larger residential property.

What Edinburgh customers call us for

The Edinburgh jobs we are asked for most are commercial fit-out and refurbishment, fire alarm design, installation and maintenance, intruder alarm and CCTV systems, EICRs and periodic inspection for landlords and businesses, solar PV and battery storage, EV charging for workplaces and car parks, and power factor correction or voltage optimisation where a site's energy costs justify it.

Why us

Why Edinburgh customers use WPP Electrical

Over 40 years of contracting

Established 1985 and family owned. Around three quarters of our work is commercial, industrial and agricultural, which is the experience an Edinburgh project actually needs.

Every strand under one roof

Electrical, fire and security, solar and battery, and EV charging are delivered by the same firm, so you get one point of contact and one set of certificates instead of four contractors.

Fully accredited

SELECT 17074, ECA 1683735, NSI approved (NSI-000082/FS/S), BAFE registered (SP203), MCS via NAPIT NEP-66400, OZEV approved, RECC registered and SMAS Worksafe SSIP approved.

Insured and pre-qualified

£10m employers' liability, £5m public liability and £70k plant cover, with the SSIP accreditation principal contractors and managing agents ask for before you start.

Local conditions

What we typically find on Edinburgh projects

City commercial and mixed-use property brings a different set of constraints to rural Borders work, and they are worth pricing in at the start rather than discovering mid-programme.

  • Access, parking and out-of-hours working

City-centre sites often mean restricted access, loading windows and work outside trading hours. We price that in and plan deliveries around it rather than treating it as a variation later.

  • Listed and conservation fabric

Much of central Edinburgh is listed or in a conservation area, which restricts chasing, drilling and surface containment. Cable routes need planning around the building rather than through it.

  • Mixed-occupancy fire detection

Commercial ground floors with residential above need detection designed for the whole building, not two systems that stop at a ceiling. Grade and category mismatches are common where layouts have changed.

  • Distribution added in layers

Older commercial buildings accumulate boards, submains and tenant-specific circuits over decades, frequently unlabelled. Any meaningful fit-out starts with establishing what is actually connected to what.

  • Supply capacity assumed rather than checked

Workplace EV charging and heat or catering upgrades are often specified before anyone confirms the incoming supply can carry them. Load management or power factor correction is usually cheaper than a supply upgrade.

  • Roof access and structure for solar

Commercial solar in the city stands or falls on roof condition, structural capacity and safe access. We survey before quoting, so the price reflects the mounting and access the roof really needs.

Our process

How a job in Edinburgh runs

  1. 01

    Call or send the details

Tell us the property, the location and what you need. We ask enough questions to price it properly rather than guess.

  2. 02

    Site visit and survey

For anything beyond a small job we come out, look at the supply, the board and the building, and identify anything that would otherwise become a surprise.

  3. 03

    Free fixed-price quote

Free quotes supplied. No obligation and no pressure to accept it.

  4. 04

    Booked and carried out

Work scheduled around your household, trading hours or farming calendar, by our own 18th Edition qualified electricians, with two regular sub-contractors we know well when a programme needs more hands.

  5. 05

    Tested, certified, tidied

Full testing and certification on completion, the site left clean, and the paperwork you need for landlords, insurers or building control.

Payment by bank transfer (preferred) or card. Deposits on larger jobs only, agreed case by case before we start.

Before you call

Edinburgh electricians: your questions answered

Do you work in Edinburgh?

Yes, as planned project and contract work. We are based in Coldstream and Duns and take Edinburgh jobs that are programmed in advance rather than emergency call-outs.

How far is Edinburgh from your bases?

About an hour and a quarter. We survey first, load materials before setting off and agree a programme, so the distance does not turn into repeated trips on your bill.

Do you charge extra for travel to Edinburgh?

Travel is accounted for in the written fixed price you receive before work starts, so there are no separate mileage surprises afterwards.

What kind of Edinburgh work do you take on?

Commercial fit-out and maintenance, fire alarm and security systems, EICRs and periodic inspection, solar PV and battery storage, EV charging, power factor correction and voltage optimisation.

Can you provide emergency cover in Edinburgh?

Out-of-hours attendance is available to existing contract customers where a failure would stop trading. We would not claim a rapid response in the city for a first-time caller.

Are you accredited for commercial and public-sector work?

Yes: SELECT, ECA, NSI approved for fire, BAFE registered (SP203), MCS via NAPIT, OZEV approved, RECC registered and SMAS Worksafe SSIP approved, with £10m employers' liability and £5m public liability cover.

Do you install commercial solar and battery systems?

Yes. MCS certified via NAPIT (NEP-66400) and RECC registered, using SolarEdge, SIG Energy and DMEGC on GSE, Schletter or Renusol mounting, with 25-year panel warranties.

Can you install workplace EV charging?

Yes, as an OZEV approved installer. We check supply capacity and board arrangements first and use load management where a supply upgrade would otherwise be needed.

Do you work as a subcontractor to main contractors?

Yes. Our SSIP accreditation, insurances and certification are set up for exactly that, and we have worked to principal contractors since the 1980s.

Which other areas do you cover?

Our core area is the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland, including Coldstream, Duns, Kelso, Galashiels, Greenlaw, Chirnside, Eyemouth, Jedburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Wooler.

Nearby areas we cover

Edinburgh sits within a working area that runs from the Berwickshire coast to the Cheviots, all covered from Unit 4 Home Pl, Coldstream TD12 4DT.
