Industrial installations fail differently from commercial ones. The loads are heavier, the environment is harsher, the starting currents are brutal and the cost of an hour's downtime is measured in production rather than footfall.

What the service covers

We install and maintain three-phase distribution and panel boards, submains between buildings, motor and machinery supplies, control panel connections, isolators and local switchgear, high-bay and task lighting, welfare and office areas within industrial units, cable tray and ladder containment, external and yard power, and the inspection, testing and thermographic-style condition checking that keeps it all running. Power factor correction and voltage optimisation are available where metering shows they will pay.

Manufacturing and processing units, joinery and engineering workshops, cold stores, grain and feed operations, sawmills, distribution and storage facilities, and rural industrial sites across Berwickshire and North Northumberland where the nearest alternative contractor is a long drive away.

When it is needed

When you are installing or relocating plant, when spare ways have run out, when a supply keeps tripping under starting load, when an EICR has coded the distribution system, when insurance or a customer audit requires evidence of a maintained installation, or when unplanned stoppages are becoming a pattern rather than an event.

Why professional work matters

Industrial electrical work is unforgiving of guesswork. Cable sizing has to allow for volt drop over long runs and for motor starting; discrimination has to be designed so a single machine fault does not drop the whole board; containment has to survive vibration, dust and wash-down. We are SELECT (17074) and ECA (1683735) approved, SMAS Worksafe SSIP accredited, produce RAMS for virtually all jobs, and carry £10m employers' and £5m public liability cover.

What an under-maintained industrial installation costs

On an industrial site, the electrical failure is rarely the headline. The stopped line, the spoiled batch and the idle shift are.

  • Downtime dwarfs the repair

    An hour of stopped production usually costs more than the entire remedial works order that would have prevented it. Planned isolation on a Sunday morning is cheap; an unplanned one on a Tuesday afternoon is not.

  • Heat is the warning nobody reads

    Loose terminations and overloaded busbars run hot long before they fail. Without periodic inspection, that warning is only found when the board burns and the lead time on replacement gear starts.

  • Poor discrimination takes out the whole board

    Where protective devices are not graded correctly, one motor fault drops everything upstream. It is a design problem that presents as an operational one, repeatedly, until someone tests the arrangement.

  • Plant added without a load calculation

    The most common mistake we are called to correct: new machinery connected to the nearest available way, with no assessment of capacity, starting current, phase balance or cable size. It works until the day everything runs at once.

  • Documentation gaps fail audits

    Customer audits and insurers want inspection reports, test results and evidence of competent maintenance. A site that cannot produce them can lose a contract over paperwork rather than performance.

How the job runs, start to finish

  1. 01

    Step 1: Site survey and load assessment

    We survey the incoming supply, boards, phase balance and spare capacity, and establish the real loading rather than the nameplate assumption.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Design, RAMS and fixed-price quote

    A written schedule of works with cable sizes, protection and discrimination, priced as a fixed sum, with Risk Assessment Method Statements. Larger designs take one to two weeks.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Installation around production

    Work sequenced into shutdowns, night shifts and weekends. Temporary supplies where continuity is essential, and isolation permits agreed with your site management.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Testing, verification and commissioning

    Full inspection and testing, rotation and phase checks, protective device verification and functional commissioning of machinery supplies before handover.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Certification and planned maintenance

    Certificates, schedules and test results for your compliance file, plus an optional planned maintenance routine so board condition is checked before it becomes downtime.

Payment by bank transfer (preferred) or card. Deposits on larger jobs only, agreed case by case before we start.

In detail

Industrial systems, materials and methods

The specification follows the process. A wash-down food area, a dusty grain plant and a machine shop each demand different containment, ingress protection and maintenance intervals.

Three-phase distribution and switchgear

Main panel boards, submains to local distribution, load balancing across phases and graded protection for discrimination. Surge protection where drives, PLCs and control systems justify it. Replacement programmes planned with temporary supplies so production continues during changeover.

Motor, machinery and control connections

Supplies to motors, drives, conveyors, compressors, extraction and process plant, with correct isolation local to the machine, rotation checks before commissioning, and cable sized for both continuous load and starting current. We work alongside machinery suppliers and control panel builders so the interface between their panel and your installation is defined rather than assumed.

Containment and cabling

Steel wire armoured for external and inter-building runs, galvanised tray and ladder for internal distribution, conduit and trunking where flexibility for future change matters, and LSF cable where smoke emission is a consideration. Containment is specified with capacity for the next change, because on an industrial site there is always a next change.

Industrial lighting

High-bay and low-bay LED schemes designed for the task rather than the catalogue, with lux levels appropriate to machine work, emergency lighting on escape routes, and external yard and loading lighting on photocell or timed control. LED replacement schemes usually deliver the clearest energy saving available on an industrial site.

Inspection, testing and planned maintenance

Periodic inspection at intervals matched to the environment, board condition checks, protective device verification and a priced remedial schedule with every report. Where downtime tolerance is low, planned maintenance visits are scheduled into your quiet periods for the year ahead.

Industrial versus commercial differences

Commercial installations are largely about occupancy, escape and small power. Industrial installations are about load, environment and continuity: three-phase capacity, starting currents, harmonics from drives, phase balance, ingress protection and the operational cost of a stoppage. The certification is the same family of documents; the engineering behind it is not.

How much does industrial electrical work cost?

Every industrial job is priced on scope, access and downtime constraints. We survey, design and issue a fixed-price written quote for the great majority of work, so the figure you approve is the figure you pay.

How long will a quote take?

Free quotes supplied. Industrial installations requiring load assessment and design typically take one to two weeks.

Can you work during a shutdown or night shift?

Yes. Shutdowns, nights and weekends are normal working patterns for us, agreed at survey stage. Out-of-hours call-out is charged at approximately 1.5 times the standard hourly rate.

Do you supply RAMS and hold SSIP accreditation?

Yes. RAMS are produced for virtually all jobs and we hold SMAS Worksafe SSIP accreditation, along with SELECT (17074) and ECA (1683735) approval.

What insurance cover do you carry?

£10m employers' liability and £5m public liability, with certificates provided for your compliance file.

How often should industrial installations be inspected?

Intervals depend on the environment, use and condition, and the inspection report specifies the recommended next date. Harsh environments, dust, damp, vibration, wash-down, warrant shorter intervals than an office.

Can you connect new machinery to our existing supply?

We assess capacity, phase balance and starting current before connecting anything. If the existing supply cannot take the plant, we will tell you that and price the upgrade rather than connect it and hope.

How long does an industrial installation last?

Well-specified distribution and containment last for decades in the right environment, but harsh conditions and load growth shorten that. Planned inspection is how you find out which position you are in before it costs you production.

Do you offer emergency cover for industrial sites?

Emergency call-outs are available. Out-of-hours calls are answered for existing customers; otherwise leave a message and we return urgent calls promptly.
